Mild Steel Shim Stock
Low carbon mild steel shim stock is cold rolled to achieve its hardness of 165VPN (min) which is ideal for shims, washers, gaskets and also suitable for drawing or forming. Low carbon mild steel cannot be hardened except by cold working because their carbon content is too low for significant heat treatment reaction to take place. However, they can be case hardened to give a harder surface. We also offer 316 stainless steel shim kits, brass shim sheets, 304 stainless steel pre-cut shims, and other shim kits.

Mild Steel FAQs
Mild steel shim stock is a thin, flat piece of mild steel used for shimming, which helps to adjust or align components in machinery or other equipment.
Mild steel shim stock is widely used in various mechanical and industrial applications due to its flexibility and ease of use. Common applications include:
- Machinery Alignment: Used to fill gaps and align components in machinery and engines, ensuring proper functioning and reducing wear and tear.
- Automotive Repairs: Mild steel shim stock can be used to adjust and align parts in automotive assemblies, such as in engines and transmission systems.
- Precision Engineering: Helps achieve exact tolerances and fitments in mechanical assemblies.
- Construction and Fabrication: Used to level and align parts in construction and metal fabrication projects.
- Maintenance and Repair: Utilised in various maintenance and repair tasks to correct alignment issues and ensure proper operation of equipment.
Standard sizes for mild steel shim stock come in various thicknesses, widths and lengths. You can find the exact dimensions above. We also offer custom shims to fit your desired requirements.
Mild steel shim stock is generally not recommended for outdoor use because it can rust and corrode when exposed to moisture. For applications where the shim stock will be exposed to the elements or high humidity, consider alternatives like stainless steel shims, which offer better corrosion resistance and durability.
